B-51 bomber on display in Bangor in 1951

Bangor Daily News Photo by Danny Maher Hundreds of eastern Maine people thronged Abbott Square in Bangor on Saturday, June 30, 1951 and Sunday, July 1, 1951 to viewed the famed B-51 bomber, "Lucky Lady II," only plane in history to have flown non-stop around the world. The plane is currently on an overland tour of the United States before being retired to the Smithsonian Institute at washington, D.C., to take its place among the nation's historical mementoes. Entering through the nose of the craft, visitors were able to view all the interior facilities of a great bomber. Also on display was an F-84 Thunderjet.

The two planes are part of the Nationwide Wings of Freedom Tour sponsored by The Collins Foundation that will be at the Bangor International Airport through Sunday Sept. 29. <br />
