Patten, ME — September 30, 2016 — Richard Schmidt III (right), Patten town council chairman, and Ray Foss, Patten town manager, explain how visitors to the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument will travel through Patten on their way to the northern entrance. Schmidt says he has already noticed an increase in visitors and expects the numbers to climb. The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument has attracted 605 vehicles since President Barack Obama created it in mid-August, according to a vehicle counter installed on Katahdin Loop Road.
