BELFAST, MAINE -- 05/03/2016 -- Troy Howard Middle School Garden Project coordinotor David Wessels shovels leaves on the compost pile as sixth graders from Izzy DeGraff and Aloaura Dunham check the temperature of the heap at Troy Howard Middle School school's garden Tuesday morning. The Garden Project started in 2000 where students plant, take care of and harvest the vegetables. Most of the vegetables produced in the gardens are used for meals in the school cafeteria. The food scraps are composted and end up back in the soil. Gabor Degre | BDN
