Sardine 2SM.jpg
Ed Muellen of Eastport grins after he kissed the giant sardine just moments after the New Year of 2011 arrived Saturday. Dozens of celebrants lined up to kiss the sardine, which is lowered each New Year's at midnight from the Tides Institute building on Water Street. It is considered good luck for the coming year to pucker up to the fish. Four hundred people attended Eastport's celebration which included two droppings: a giant red maple leaf as homage to its Canadian neighbors across the bay, and the sardine, which represents the city's fishing history.
