ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine -- 07/31/19 -- Trail crew workers Chris Fabian (facing camera) and Chris Barter pull a suspended rock into place at the lower end of the Kurt Diederich's Climb trail near The Tarn pond on Wednesday, July 31, 2019. Nearly a half-mile of the historic trail is being rebuilt this summer, but still Acadia has more than $65 million worth of deferred maintenance projects, park officials said. Congress is considering a proposal to increase funding for more than $11 billion in overdue projects at National Park Service properties nationwide.

  • Doug Duncan, a member of the Acadia National Park trails crew, expains the high-line system of wires and pulleys used to fly large chunks of local granite down steep hillsides so they may be used to reconstruct the east leg of the Jordan Pond Loop Trail. The century-old trail is to first to benefit from the park's new Trails Forever mainetanance endowment.<br />
